HOW IS THERE SO MUCH MILK IN THERE?

Well we did it.  The delivery was way harder than we were thinking it would be (BIG SHOCK, HUGE) as I wasn't dilated at all and they had to put a FREAKING BALLOON MY HOOHA and 6 hours later I was kinda dilated.  So we pushed.  For THREE HOURS we pushed.  And THEN the doctor said, this isn't happening and we are at risk here, so we need to do a C-section.  We were bummed.  And then I was so drugged up I was kind of hysterical and having a panic attack but then we heard the cry.  The first cry from the boy came out (at 6.2 pounds) and then right afterwards the girl (at 5.3 pounds).  And while I don't remember much from those first few hours -  frankly I had the shakes that so vividly recalled detoxing and delirium tremens which TERRIFIED ME more than anything else -  it was simultaneously the worst day and the best day of my life.

The babies were born.  And now we are all home after 4 days in the hospital.  I am still in pain, but I am healing well and my dear sweet dumpster husband has been so much more than incredible I cannot put into words what the last week has truly been like.

You know, I was the first woman to ever be pregnant and now I am the first woman to ever have a birth story and to fall in love with her babies.  I know, I know.  I'm very unique in that all these feelings are happening.  I'm laughing and crying a lot.  There are so many emotions.  But you know what?  I am FEELING ALL THE FEELINGS.  And they aren't all pretty or rational - that's why they are FEELINGS - because feelings are not fact, but I'm so grateful to feel them ALL.  Most of them are chock full o'love and gratitude.  Some are overwhelming and scary.  But that's the way this all goes.

My scar hurts and bewbies are so sore, but what an amazing experience.  These babies are letting us sleep quite a bit and actually they are into a routine already that is giving us ample time to just enjoy them and still get some other stuff done.  Mostly though, we are just loving this time with them.

Here are some random thoughts that need to be shared -

  • HOW IS THERE SO MUCH MILK IN THERE?   You know what I'm talking about.
  • I have lost 30 pounds out of 55 that I gained.  In one week.  HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?  Best diet ever.  Just get knocked up with twins and give birth.  KABLAMMO.
  • My maternity clothes are all packed up and in storage ready to be passed onto the next lady I know who gets to be fashionable and pregnant.  Mostly I wore my regular clothes and we shall see how totally stretched out they got from MY HUGE BELLY.
I leave you with this gem from my dear sweet dumpster husband.  I think the 2nd or 3rd night in the hospital (the babies and husband stay with the mama all the time in my room) at 2am or something, he says, "Parents of single babies?  PUSSIES."  Man, we needed that laugh at that time.

Also, after all the nonsense of a day and half of ballooning and labor and c-sections, he says, "I've seen some things."  And indeed he had.  We both had.  But we are so grateful to be here and with these babies.  WE HAVE SEEN SOME SHIT.  And we are excited to see a whole lot more.

  11. Hey, I have Irish twins. My daughter was 5 months old when I got pregnant with my son. I have seen A LOT of shit, literally. I buy two different sizes of diapers. (I also have a 19 year old and a 16 year old) Sometimes, if the stars are aligned just right, both babies nap at the same time. At least one of them sleeps consistently through the night. Even though it was pretty difficult to go through pregnancy at my age and have two back to back, I really wouldn't change a thing. This is an amazing time, and I get a chance to do things differently this time around. You and your husband are truly blessed and I hope you never lose your sense of wonder at your babies.

  18. I am amazed by parents of twins! When my daughter is being batshit crazy, I can't imagine how I would handle 2 of her. She started off as a twin (through IVF), but my husband and I joke that she ate the other baby...

  27. I did the push for three hours thing AND the tremors. Completely uncontrollable tremors. I did the painful bewbies and the crying and the laughing and the doubts and the joys and I thought I was the only one. It's nice to know that other women do that too! I wish you and Hall and Oates and D.H. all the best in the world. Blessings to you!

  28. ADORABLE! And yes, the poor poor bewbies and the volumes that they hold is crazy and awesome at the same time.

  29. Awwww congratulations!! Whenever you talk about feeling your feelings, it reminds me of something my yoga teacher says. During the meditative part of the class she says to take note of what you're feeling and what you're thinking, but without judgement. The goal is simply to recognize that they're there and acknowledge them. I am *slowly* learning how to do that.

  42. Thank you so much for sharing your birth story! It is powerful and important. The longer time passed after my first daughter's birth, the more the amazing parts started to outweigh the scary and painful stuff. I even did it again.
Babies are worth it! Hope the boobs feel better soon, it gets so much easier in just a few weeks (I'm sure that sounds like forever). Breastfeeding is awesome. I promise that part gets easier. Although I'm just a pussy that did it one at a time. Haha! Enjoy those babies!

May you have the extra helping hands you need to get you all through the early days... Sending some love your way. Happy for you!

  63. I like that one of your labels for this post is: FUCK. Those little peanuts are the sweetest things ever- look at them with their little mittens and beautiful little faces. I'm sorry it was such a shitty delivery- the bad memories will fade as you let the awesome babiness fill you up more and more. I'm so thrilled for you! P.S. Here's a tip regarding breast milk: It's really fun to let it shoot out of your bewbs across the room so everyone can be entertained and amazed by the magic of your body.

  64. Oh hunni. They are uhmayzeen!!

Sorry to hear delivery sucked, but oh am I so happy for you and dh. They're beautiful.

SO worth all of it. and bewbies will be tender but you will cope, every woman does..its how were made.. xoxo
